Meta Rule:67
An 'avoid' Special can only be played when the target of the attack is the player of the Special.

shift, jla then pure avoid is illegal?

or am i reading it wrong?

No, it's still legal.

The new character is now the 'target' and may use an avoid to defend.

That rule is meant to clarify that characters can't use their personal avoids to defend others.
