Hello all,
Jack and I have been talking about printing up some sets of 'The Marvels' on Proper Card Stock for a while now, but we've found a printer who's willing to do it. The quote was a reasonable estimate, so we're moving forward.
What we'd like to know is - are any of you interested in joining in on this venture? The more sets we order, the cheaper it will be. Right now it's looking like $12 per set of 90(ish) if we order 36 sets.
The plan is to produce all the cards from the Marvels, plus the Any Power teamwork. Certain will be produced in multiples with each set (IE: Silver Sable's teammate avoid).
Give us an idea of how many we need, and we'll get the ball rolling.

Printed double sided with a back? With the power cards and stuff too?

Double sided with the proper back, yes. Power cards, no.
We're only going to print the Marvels. We don't want to re-print any cards that already exist officially (except the AP teamwork, because it's so damn rare and so damned useful!) ;)
-BBH
I should have clarified. Not the regular power cards, but what about Any Power 6 and 8 and a Multi 5 since there weren't any Marvel-backed cards like that? (that's the Marvel only in me talking)
Would this include a 4 stat Galactus?
And how about an Intellect 6+3 Basic Universe since the Xavier Protocols are so rare?
I'm not trying to look a gift horse in the mouth, but if we're going to do this, we might as well do it up right. Let me know if I can be helpful in any way.
at $12 per set, I'm very interested. I'd be happy to buy 2 sets :)
any idea of the timeline you're expecting?

I also would be good for two at that price, if it included some of the extras like I mentioned (because I could use two copies of OPDs for my playset).

It's a possibility, but right now we're going to be more concerned with the Marvels specifically.
As for timeline, we'll want to get the art and the card design down pat. It could be a few months yet, but no one would have to commit financially until we're ready to go to print. We just need an idea of who wants them so we can order accordingly.
Ordering multiple sets is not an issue. (I plan on 2 or 3 myself.) ;)
-BBH
I definitely want a few - depending on the art :P I've liked some peoples selections and not so much on others ::)
in like flynn
We're trying not to destroy the market for cards that are still worth something on eBay. Printing AP Teamworks will not ruin any market because people who want (and can afford it) will still buy it for collection purposes.
I stated on my previous thread with what the entire Marvels expansion would have included. This set is only a subset of the set I posted. If we start printing off 5 Multi, 6 Any Power, etc., we'd be interfering with the market and that may not sit well with the eBay sellers.

I can understand that. So, I guess that means we're pretty confident in this printer making a great card then! That's a plus.
I would be good to buy 1, maybe 2 sets. It would depend on how much the shipping costs would end up being.
Excellent point.
Shipping costs will be extra, as well as any taxes we have to pay to the print shop (tax is 13% where we live) unless BBH's quote included tax. Looks like about $20 total for one set if everything's factored in. Of course, you can pick up your ordered sets at a meetup/tournament after they're done.
Wow! You guys don't know how long I've been waiting to hear about someone finally doing something like this! ;D You can so count me in on this. For 2 sets even! ;D
I am definitely in for a set or two. Like Nate, I've been waiting for this ever since Onslaught posted his cards.
I understand not wanting to do the 'duplicate' cards to mess with the market, but I'll still put my vote in for the 'non-Marvel' cards. That is, I'd really like to have a 6 and 8 any power and a 5 multipower with Marvel art.
I guess I agree with Mattkoz that if we're going to do it and spend all this money (in total) to have a professional printer do it, then it'd be a shame to not do everything.
Regardless, I'm definitely in.
To the market factor, my guess is most people buying in for a Marvels set already own the any power and multis from other sets. I question the real impact on the market, and the people that would be hating on that probably aren't much fans of OP and likely monopolizing collectors in it for their own financial gain. But I can see where we might not want to even stir the pot and draw any unwanted copyright attention.
However, I still say Make Mine Marvel!
Any way to see what artwork is proposed for the cards?
I understand where you're coming from. The true collectors would still value the real cards and the people that play (not a disjoint set) would like to have the cards for their decks. My guess would be that the market wouldn't be affected by these prints but you never know. The surge of Beyonders on eBay in the recent weeks has shown that there's still some interest in it. If we were to print Beyonder (which we won't) my guess is that the number of bidders will decline and thus not cause prices to go as high -- which is actually a good thing. I spoke to the Orange King about this and he was okay with the idea of reprinting 5 Multi and the like.
Another issue that arises with printing currently existing cards is counterfeit. We would literally be making counterfeit cards, going by the definition of counterfeit.
Another problem is the reselling of this printed set (or subset/singles) of Marvels. We're thinking of forcingencouraging everyone that buys a set of these to not sell them off. We might run into problems with lawyers if a card makes it into the market. The business model that Marvel/Disney has is profiting from the likeness of these characters. By making any profit (profit defined as purchase price - cost) from these cards we would be infringing on their business model and lawyers come knocking on someone's door.
My guess is that everyone buying a set of cards is a fan of OverPower and likes the Marvels expansion enough to fund a small run of prints for it. We're doing it for the fans, there should be no reason to even sell these off.
---
We're not even at the stage where we're deciding on artwork. We'll have a group of people working on the Marvels expansion and we'll figure it out then. My guess is that these will be replacing the ones currently on our site so there will be previews before the prints are done.
cool. thanks jack
if i can do anything to help with it i would be glad to
I am definitely in for 2 sets.
I already posted via the Facebook page but wanted to make sure it wasn't overlooked. So, check the facebook page for my order. lol
That's an amazing initiative, Jack!

You couldn't destroy the market by printing the AP TW or other extremely rare cards. If we were back in the days, you could even discourage a regular player to buy packs, trying to get a DoW or a Leech.
But after so many years, people who are willing to bid high for singles are collectors, and having a high quality proxy or a counterfeit, as you said, won't change their need for the real deal.
On the contrary, printing proxys from commons could affect the market, since a regular or new player, who doesn't care much about collecting, would have a cheaper option than buying the official cards.
Besides it, printing rarities would benefit players, who have been playing with lower quality proxys for many years. Or someone thinks that there is someone out there who doesn't have a Leech, but didn't buy one yet just because he believes he will bumb into a cheap offer someday?

That would be a real problem. If there is someone out there that could try to fool a buyer by selling a pig in a poke. Maybe you should consider to include a phrase in the cards like "This card is a copy printed by fans. Not for sale", just like the copyright info in the cards from Image set.
I don't think any lawyers would bother with such small scale as OP is today. If you were thinking on printing MTG or VS Sys, tht could be another story.
Just my two cents
It would be easy to put a small marker on them to differentiate as Bios mentions. We could always design any reprints with new art so they were obviously different from the originals.
I'm giddy to think these will be such a quality to even consider there could be confusion on counterfeit.
Yeah, I figured the (few) reprints would have different art anyway. I four-stat Galactus and a Beyond with a proper inherent would be nice, plus the 5 multi and 6 and 8 anys. Those wouldn't really be counterfit (the power cards anyway) since they don't exist in Marvel.
We are definitely putting a noticeable disclaimer on the backs of the cards with "NOT FOR RESALE" on it. We're going to be a bit more strict than the "NOT FOR PROFIT" clause we had because we simply want the original buyers to keep them.
As for lawyers, don't forget who we're dealing with here. It's Disney, the people who decided that their copyrights should be extended to 70 years upon death of the author from 14. OverPower, the game, is likely not going to draw attention from lawyers, it's the images (likeness) of the characters that would cause problems.
Good idea on the disclaimer.
I completely agree that fearing Disney is a good idea, OrangeKing has been including Marvels prints in his auctions for awhile. I realize that he's including them as free additions, but I'm sure Disney's lawyers would tear right through that regardless.
The best way to do this I think, regardless of which cards are printed (and I agree Jack, Overpower isn't the issue, it's art of the characters) is that they will be printed once and given to those that paid the production costs, and they'll never be 'sold' online. ever.
Frankly, if people tried to sell them, it seems that would be on them not the original producer. I don't know the law that well, but what we're talking about seems to be in the spirit of fair use. Maybe I'm ignorant.

In addition to having something printed on the cards themselves, it seems like it might be worthwhile to have the people ordering these sign a waiver/agreement form to further protect the producers of this re-print... I know I'd be more than happy to sign such an agreement :D
Another thing we'll do is have everyone involved on the Invoice. Since we are simply a group of fans who are chipping in for a personal product that is not being marketed, this will help cover us on that front.
Before we go to print, we'll have a lock from all involved parties. Jack and I discussed capping it as well. We may stop at 54 sets out of necessity (we have to order in increments of 18, for whatever reason that's how this company works). We may be overdoing it playing it safe, but better to err on the side of caution, methinks.
But as it stands, the next step is designing the cards. Jack and I had a brief discussion on the borders. We agreed that the border should be distinct from any existing set. But that's as far as we've gotten. One step at a time... :P
-BBH
Agree on the borders & look/feel being unique. It would be fun to have some font and design samples and put it to a vote of forum members, if you don't think that would create too much drama.

I agree on different designs and on a potential vote (and also that if it was too much, you guys can just pick, this is your project).
Capping at 54 seems reasonable. That would let 27 people get two sets (which it seems like most want). I feel like that would cover most of the regulars on the boards.
It's not just the forums that we're focusing on, there's a lot of interest on the Facebook page.
Great idea and I'd definitely be in for a couple of sets for old times sake.
It sounds like you have thought about the copyright issues carefully and, although I'm not a lawyer, I'd just add that the fact that you are not doing this for profit and the fact that you add 'not for sale' on the cards or make people sign something would NOT protect you legally should someone decide to make a big deal out of it. Copyright infringement is copyright infringement.
However it does seem that those are the sorts of things that will make you look like a reasonable fan rather then a counterfeiting pirate and would make it more likely you'd simply attract a 'cease and desist' threatening letter rather than an actual lawsuit.
Quote from Jack: "We're trying not to destroy the market for cards that are still worth something on eBay. Printing AP Teamworks will not ruin any market because people who want (and can afford it) will still buy it for collection purposes."
If items are not for resale, then the images can be used by permission. As a former comic shop owner, and official Overpower tournament organizer, we we're given rights to use any comic book company's properties (that allowed it, none come to mind that didn't) we wanted as long as no reselling (yes this info is still current as of last year). T-shirts for example that we're given away to promote your store with comic characters on it we're fine. It's the selling that causes problems. As you all have stated the costs associated to all involved are just to get them printed and not to make a profit. I think you are good to go and the idea is fantastic.
As far as destroying the Ebay market, well, it is very limited as is. Just ask anyone who sells them (IE Orangeking and bornagain79). I'm betting they would love to get their hands on them to sell on e-bay, but really, would there be a big enough market, since most buyers are probably from this site and will buy them here anyway?
Quote from Jack: "We are definitely putting a noticeable disclaimer on the backs of the cards with "NOT FOR RESALE" on it. We're going to be a bit more strict than the "NOT FOR PROFIT" clause we had because we simply want the original buyers to keep them."
Can the disclaimer be put on the front instead of the back for those of us that aren't crazy about using sleeves. That was the problem before with different backs from the DC and Image sets. Basically propping up the then new businesses of card sleeve manufacturing.
** Tiny fact from the powers that be from Op from back in the day. The main reason for battlesites was for people to use all their old 3 stat characters that before battlesites were basically obsolete, and at the time many, many people were upset they had to now buy all the cards again at the new 4 stat. Domzalski and Perazza both confirmed this to me when pressed for an answer.
That being said, count me in for at least 2 sets. ;D
Thank you for providing that insight.
The only difference I see between our situations is that you had an agreement with the comic book company, possibly informal or explicit, to use their items as long as they weren't resold. We don't have any agreement in place.
There shouldn't be much of a problem printing out the super rares (as long as we use our own art). Orange King said that he was fine with the idea and I stated my arguments above with why it shouldn't matter.
The backs will likely change, we may or may not be using the standard Spider-Man/Wolverine back. We'll definitely change up the logo with the new one I "created".

Excellent trivia point for the battlesite and 3-stat heroes, I'll make sure that gets a note somewhere in the wiki.

Totally agree. Sendind lawyers to take care of such a small thing doesn't even pay lawyers' fees! Otherwise a friend mine should erase a Joker's tatoo from his forearm to avoid been lawsuited by DC/Warner.
The counterfeit issue is what we should worry. It would be real bad to find someone selling those cards on eBay.
Yeah, John's right, the 'cease and desist' letter will be long after we all get the cards. If they even monitor this site, or anything to do with OP. What's the odds? Sheesh!
The cease and desist may also include the destruction of the infringing material.
I've done some reason, maybe someone wants to give these a look through:

From the above, we cannot scan in art from comic books and put them the cards.
Unfortunately I don't think ANYONE would care about the Overpower logos and mechanics any more! (I say unfortunately because if they did care they might start making sets again!) Someone must own the copyright but my guess is that whoever does has zero interest and may not even know they own it (did it go from Fleer/Skybox to Marvel Interactive to Disney?). It's not exactly worth very much without characters to play with.
Overpower required the license to make a CCG using characters from various comic universes. This was easy to obtain for Marvel because Fleer already held the exclusive right to make trading cards from Marvel characters even back when they were separate companies. THIS is the license that was ultimately lost (to WotC probably because Marvel desperately needed cash) and caused the end of Overpower. There was talk of continuing Overpower with other, more minor, presses but this came to nothing.
The exclusive right to produce a CCG based on Marvel characters IS something that may still have some worth. The character likenesses of Marvel, DC and Image characters likewise have value and may be defended but I really don't think it's that likely in this case as long as it doesn't become too explicit.
It may even be legal to make a set of cards and to sell the cards for profit as long as you don't use the official logos, use the name Overpower, or use any copyright images. You could sell them as 'compatible with 1997's most popular superhero CCG' (like they sell all those cheap Lego imitations). For example making a whole new set of Universe cards - Tree, lampost, tire etc that people may even want to use. Same with artifacts - although you'd have to use copyright free artifacts such as the Holy Grail rather than, say, the Infinity Gauntlet.
The trademark for OverPower (USPTO serial: 74625899) expired in August 2007 so my recreation of the logo (http://www.beenhereandthere.com/SMF/index.php?topic=630.0) is very legal. Using the Marvel logo above it will be illegal though hence why my logo is just the bottom triangle. The same goes for DC and Image.
The reason why we might not be able to use the Spider-Man/Wolverine image is copyright, it would be an exact replication and may give the impression that it is an official product. After reviewing the above documents, I'm going to say we will be designing a new back.

I know when I played HeroClix people started getting custom dice made of their favorite heroes/villains. It wasn't too bad until one guy had dozens of different sets made and started to sell them in the HeroClix forums he received a cease and desist pretty quick. I also know the moderators on the site had to inform everyone that had dice made that they 'had' to be for personal use and could not be for any type of gain. So IMO someone in the Marvel/Disney community will 'know' eventually but as long as know one sells them it shoulnd't end up frustrating them too much.
And on a side note - I like the borders that Onslaught had on his set that he got printed - just wanted to throw that out there.
To Jesse's point, that was when the game (Heroclix) was still popular. They monitor that when they have their own forums. OP and it's trademark are long dead. It's also very possible to get permission, sometimes without paying for it. This is a non-profit idea after all.
Game mechanics trademark is also dead, so with enough capital it could be up again, just as John stated, without copyright infringed names and characters. Unless permission for licensing from Marv... er, Disney was granted.
Going through the fair use article on Wikipedia, there are 4 factors needed to judge fair use: purpose and character, nature of the copied work, amount and substantiality and effect upon work's value.
Purpose and character: As long as we convert what we use into something better, fair use applies. We're also converting it into a card.
Nature of the copied work: The art we would use was intended for public consumption and not a private collection.
Amount and substantiality: We're using pictures that is likely a part of a book or something similar; so extracting from comic books is okay but extracting from trading cards would be wrong.
Effect upon work's value: We won't be infringing on the copyright holder's market for the comic book or whatever.
So when do we delete all traces of this thread and come up with code names for the project? 8)

Well, the minimum the company would do was 18 sets. We received a lot of interest off the top, but it's since died down. I think everyone who wants one has chimed in. We're capping it at 80 sets. We've started work on the templates and will be creating the cards from scratch. When we have our first drafts. Everyone will be able to peruse the set before we lock in the orders. But have patience, it could be awhile.

You know saying that is like dangling a piece of candy in front of a little kid and saying "you can look at but you can't eat it for a long long time." ;D
Bumping it up. We're looking for some help with the set. So far it's me, BBH and Bios. We're mainly looking for some help with the images, preferable high resolution if you can. We'll need about 92 of them for each of the new cards created (characters and specials).
I almost forgot about this project. Any chance in an update on the images needed. :)
For the art, we're hoping to use some of the comic book and trading cards from the late 90's and early 2000's. It gives it the same artistic look as the other cards.
Hi, I will buy 2 sets. Me and my brothers have been playing since it came out. I will sneak this into my deck lol
If anyone's interested in a sneak preview of the Marvels expansion (and have a critiquing session) please send me a message here. You must be available tomorrow (Wednesday) in the evening EDT (-0400 GMT).
Sneak preview of the type of art we're going to be using for our Marvels expansion. We've decided to go with images from comic books and slightly modified them to enhance the character depicted.
We're still finalizing the types of border we're using around the card. The fonts and colours are finalized and will look very similar to those from the actual releases.

Just joined, and I could regale you with stories about Upper Deck and how they mismanaged Vs System. After they lost the DC rights and subsequently sank arguably the best CCG out there (don't get me wrong; I love my Overpower but a pro MtG player described his return to the MtG circuit as "having to go back to eating hamburgers after tasting filet mignon"), they started to plug a new game called Marvel Superstars that never got released. I think they still hold the Marvel rights and keep hinting at new ideas, but you cannot put any stock on that. They're too busy being sued and counter suing their parent company over Yu Gi Oh counterfeiting.
Like I said, I have stories and opinions.
The real point is
Sign me up for a set or two of Marvels.
Agh, apologies for the late jumping on of this, but I'd definitely be interested in a set if you're still accepting requests. $20 sounds very reasonable.
I'm going to provide an update on this.
I'm just finishing off my final exams and I'll finishing up the cards by the end of August. I'm sourcing images from comic books (from ~1995 to 2002 since that's the era of OverPower) and I would really like it if you (you as in everyone) can contribute to the project by submitting images that you think are good to use. Browse through your comic collections or subscribe to Marvel Digital Comics and help me look.
I didn't want to bring this up, but I am not putting a charge for my "labour" into the cost of this set. This project has already taken at least 40 hours of my time doing design work, font finding, discussion, image search and I'm not going to put additional fees into the Marvels set. The cost of the Marvels will be the exact cost it comes from the printer and shipping. My goal for OverPower is it to be a community and I would really appreciate it if you can help out in anyway.
I would be VERY INTERESTED in this, but i already printed a set of my own Marvels on real card stock. And besides $20 sounds real cheap, and that Spider-Girl art doesent seem to impress anyone compared to my hand-colored art i took from real OP artists. I like my Spider-Girl better...

Ever wonder why we call you Dr. Douche?
To be honest, I'd prefer to NOT do any work and just print cards with just border text and a black inner image.
After OverPower was cancelled, it lived on with dedicated people building small communities of players. Hell, if it weren't for community contributions, we wouldn't even know what types of cards were expected in the Marvels release. There has been many homemade versions of the Marvels created, each one distinctly different from each other, yours included. Most of them have stopped short of printing on card stock, others (yours) have gone through the process but as a limited print. BBH and I are doing our part to finish off the last step of the Marvels expansion saga by actually having the cards created, printed and distributed to whoever wants one. We're even ordering a bunch of extra sets so people will still have opportunities to buy them at a later time.
About your "hand-colored art", I don't give a shit about them. I'm very certain that yours will look much better than ours, I'm willing to admit that. I'm not an artist, heck, I'm barely even touching the colour picker when I use Photoshop to create these cards. I'm not looking to impress anyone with my choice of artwork, but I am willing to impress people with the effort I'm putting in to get these out to them. Other than the 9 images you've shown, nobody's really impressed with your work other than yourselves.
$20 isn't a reflection of the quality of the product; we're selling things at cost so that we can get these out to as many people as possible. We're also doing it to avoid legal troubles with the "profiting" of copyrighted materials. I'm pretty sure people wouldn't mind paying $50 for this set if that was the cost of the print. I could easily use the Marvels to recoup a lot of the costs I put into rebuilding the OverPower community but I'm not going to do that.
Ideally, how would we pay you for the sets, Jack?
I think I can speak for everyone when I say we all really appreciate what you're doing for us and the community.
Keep up the good work!
BBH is taking care of that portion of the project. I'd imagine it would be Paypal or in-person cash transactions.

Hey whats with the name calling, bro? I just stated my opinion, I didn't make a personal attack on you. If i was making a personal attack on you i woulda said "hey fatass, your cards look bad, your better off spending 40 hours on the treadmill instead of making these. You dont know how to play the game well, so you try and be big in the community by making websites, and mastering the rulebook. Lets face it Jack... you are a judge, not a player. Plus, the reason you obsessively collect old rules snippets is because its the only way you can be relevant at SOMETHING about this game. Its also funny to me to see you collect every little scarp of paper related to overpower when you werent even around when the game was going on. Another attempt to feel connected to the game since you are so bad at playing it. Those papers/posters/monthlyventures were just commonly accessed things to me back in the day, with 200 of them sitting on a table to take for free during a tournament, but nobody wanted them. So stop collecting all of the weird things a nostalgic overpower player would collect, when you picked up a Mutants Unite starter in 2007." I would say that and "Oh, and by the way are you available to judge my weekly overpower gatherings in California? Oh wait, we could just printout the rulebook, sorry we dont need you anymore." :P
Yep, thats definitely what i would of said.

Dude, you are so wrong... If you don't care about community, try playing solitaire games. Last time I checked, the game was dead and the people who still play it do it for fun. And that obsession about being a good player doesn't seem to fit this scenario.
I don't know if you consider yourself a top player, but it really doesn't matter. Would your uncle congratulate you if you ever win a OP tournament? Or would you proudly tell your co-workers that you are an OP player? Probably not... it really doesn't mean anything.
I agree that Jack overreacted, but hitting back as hard as you did wouldn't help either. Jack does a great job indeed, and its not only my opinion, lots of people are saying it all the time at the forum.
Try to reconsider your way of thinking. There is no reason to segregate a group as small as our is today.
so now we're at personal attacks, huh? what a sorry state
you know what's funny...someone who repeatedly mocked others' play styles/deck building, then when an opportunity came along to back up their words, used a team that was generic over a decade ago.
then used their 'superior' play style to place that team in the middle of the very people he was mocking.

I know, man, that was messed up Jack called me that. I think i deserve an apology. As a man who has found god (thats to nick candeloras), i am willing to forgive him.
- DRDEATH25
I probably made that comment with poor consideration of the consequences. I really didn't like your tone in that post where you blatantly attacked this project by showcasing your own. Regardless, I still apologize for calling you Dr. Douche.
Yes, I do collect random pieces of OverPower memorabilia but the collection I'm building is all going to be put into the Wiki at one point or another. What I'm doing now is no different than what Norm Barth, Nick Williams, GDMJR and others have done in the past; all I'm really doing is summarizing and continuing what they have done so it becomes easily accessible.
I will only ship you a set of our Marvels if I receive an apology for your "personal attack" on me.

These are the final versions of the border design with the black images as temporaries until I find the right images.
jack, do you have a list of the characters you already have images selected for?
None of them are final but the characters with candidate images are:
Adam Warlock
Banshee
Bishop
Captain America
Colossus
Hawkeye
Icemn
Marrow
Multiple Man
Nick Fury
Professor X
Psylocke
Spider-Girl
Starjammers
Storm
Thor
Thunderbolts
Wolverine
X-Man
X-Men: OT
I have a few others but those images are extremely "weak" in terms of expression of the card.
the problem with my knowledge, is that it's mostly much older stuff.
are you finding that the scans from the mid 90s have colours crisp enough for you? iirc, you mentioned you weren't doing recolouring
I'll do some enhancing to the image if they seem really faded. I'm mostly separating out the characters from the background in these images.

These look fantastic Jack. One question. Will OPD/the comic credit be centered on the image? Right now it looks like it's centered on the card as a whole and it looks off to me.
Yes, that's how it will appear. I know it looks really messed up but if you look at any recent specials, it's centered to the card and not the image.
Quote from: Jack on August 06, 2012, 12:00:39 AM

Interesting, I never noticed that before.
Am I correct that you want to stick to images from comics and nothing from trading cards?
I'm hoping to get all 92 images from the comics, willing to stretch it back to the early 90's and late 80's if there's a really good image (good is defined as matching the specials' name and/or effect -- Human Torch's Strategic Burn would show an image of him using flames to actively attack an enemy).
EDIT:
When we do finally print off the Marvels expansion, we're doing one full set (90 new Special cards and 2 new Character cards). Of course, that's the minimum we're going to include and we have realized some people may want more than 1 of some particular cards.
So, here is a list of cards we're including 2 or 3 of in this release. One Per Decks will not have duplicates.
Three included:
Daredevil's Guardian Devil
Dr. Strange's Spell Of Protection
Inhumans' Royal Family
Sabra's Loyal Soldier
Silver Sable's Rescue Mission
Wasp's Shrink From Harm
Two included:
Captain Britain's Britain's Champion
Colossus' Stoic Defender
Cyclops' Focused Force
Iron Man's Armored Avenger
Maverick's Reaction Time
Multiple Man's Take The Hit
Namor's The Avenging Son
Phoenix's Warn & Change
Polaris' Direct Energy Flow
Reyes' Form Force
Rogue's Power Wipe
Shang Chi's Swift Counteract
She Hulk's Legal Defense
Spider-Man's With Great Power...
Strong Guy's Backstage Bouncer
Wasp's Wasp Sting
X-Man's Mind Slam
Suggestions for other cards are welcome.
distribution looks good jack
i'd add a 2nd of iceman's, and get rid of spideys
do you have a list of cards your still looking for imagines for. i can go through my comics i have a ton of x-men and some spiderman books from that era. Overpower got me into comics so just about all of them are from this time. also I dont have a scanner so any picture i find that you would want to use i can mail you the comics as long as you mail them back when I buy my set.
Still a ton of things BBH and I need to discuss. WGP has an updated version that would prevent people from looping WGP if it were in the 8 cards to look at.
Quote from: http://overpower.ca/archive/Ripayuheadoff/marvelguide/OP.htmlAlternate recommended game text - Look at the top 8 cards in your Draw Pile and select one card to be placed in hand. May not choose another "With Great Power...". Put the remaining cards back into the Draw Pile and reshuffle. Put "With Great Power..." on top of Draw Pile.
And we'll go with a slight variation on it as shown on the preview image. That was not factored in when we decided on these numbers.
There were a lot of cards that were "one-but-two-if-we-have-room" but it depends on the printer and what caps they impose. There are 10 cards on that list:
QuoteAngel's High Flyer
Captain Mar-Vell's Cosmic Avenger
Elektra's Reclaim Honor
Iceman's Frozen Prison
Jubilee's Wolvie Style
Longshot's Stroke Of Luck
Marrow's Bone Shard
Shadowcat's Phased Disruption
Silver Surfer's Stellar Bolt
Sunfire's Controlled Burn
We also need to discuss if we need to include Galactus 4-stat; it's just as "official" as the rest of the Marvels set and it doesn't replicate a current card. Also considering the Any-Power Teamwork and Avenger's ID Artifact.

To be honest, I would welcome alternative suggestions for a particular card. The images I've picked out are only what I think looks good and what represents the special.
With that said, there are some characters that I really need help looking for after doing a quick pass through the characters:
Alpha Flight (particularly Madison Jeffries)
Heroes for Hire
Shang Chi
War Machine
Wasp
The rest of them haven't been found yet or has good candidates. I'll post an update next week with samples of cards before retouching.
And don't worry about sending the comics, I have access to all of them and sending me just the comic's name, month/year and optionally a page number would help.
put me down as a YES for galactus(4)/ID/APtw
Going to preview the AP Teamwork idea I had:
I might not even enhance it any further to get rid of speech bubbles.
looks great!
I like the thought of a four stat Galactus. do you have a link the the complete list of marvels i coudl print out to go through as I check my books
I knew I forgot something...
http://overpower.ca/wiki/List_of_new_cards_in_Marvels_OverPower
I actually reallly like the AP Teamwork, i would pay 20 for the set, just for that card.
When i printed my set, I also printed a bunch of other cards like Beyonder (he is in the marvels too though), A-Next, 5M, DoW and some other rare cards that get used in decks alot, so i can run multiple decks without switching my "playable copy" of those cards around. I think people would like to have extra copies of those cards. Also, add the pheonix card to the multiple's list, i had a deck where i used three of those.
the AP teamwork looks fantastic.
- DRDEATH25
The problem with including those cards (A-Next, 5 Multi, DoW, Beyonder) is that it would effect the market value of the cards. We probably had a discussion about this earlier in the topic. Granted that selling a card that only has the words "play this card like you would a BEYONDER" would have the same effect.
If we were to print the "super rares", they would have to be the ones that could-have-been available in the Marvels. So 5 Multi, 8 Any-Power, Beyonder would be included. A-Next and Dow would not. I have compiled a page that shows which cards would have been available and which ones we could consider printing:
http://overpower.ca/wiki/Marvels_OverPower
Again, it depends on our printer and what caps they impose, I'm willing to do a complete 300 card release of Marvels but most of it would be redundant. The artwork for the reprinted cards would have to be different. Having Ron Perazza's Beyonder or the Tiffany would be a direct infringement. There's nothing unlawful about placing the icons/text in the same place since it represents a whole entity and not a single card.
More discussion with BBH is needed.

I'm willing to do a complete 300 card release of Marvels
I would love to see that :)
That'll take much more time than the ~100 card release we're doing right now since we would have to source 200 more images to use. The 300 card set would be mostly redundant cards as noted on the article I posted. However, there are some cards that would be brand "new" and not created yet (set of Missions, Events, new Homebase) and that would pretty much constitute a homemade set since there was no official play testing done by the reserves with those cards.
It'll be one of the longer term projects on my list and I don't plan to start it until the website projects are done. But I'm glad to see the enthusiasm with the idea.

Preview of one of the finalized artwork choices for the Marvels expansion:
That AP TW looks amazing. I wouldn't touch the speech bubble at all.
I'm pretty sure I've posted this before, but I'm in favor of including the reprint cards for the 'special' ones. A correct Galactus and Beyonder, the accidental inserts, and Marvel versions of the 5M and the APs (they were included too right?) would be fantastic.
I would personally like 3x of Silver Sable's special, if that's any consideration towards your final decision. Regardless, I'll be happy.
For the AD, EE and MH specials, there will be 3 included. Basically, any useful defense specials were 3's. Most of the 2's (or 2-if-we-have-room) were damage cards >6 and the LO's and EB's.
Going to talk to BBH about the reprinted cards after my finals.
they're looking good there jack
Thanks Jack. Good luck on your finals.
Finals are done, going to celebrate for a while (I'm completely done my degree) before heading to work on the Marvels.

Totaly umderstand bud. We can but dream :)
I'd buy a set if BBH will take my Paypal $ ;)
What about late 90s Marvel Masterpiece art? That was my favorite vintage stuff ...
We're trying to keep the set's look consistent throughout. That's why I decided to go with comic book panels.
EDIT: The other reason why I didn't want to use the Marvel Masterpieces is because they are also cards. If we were to "sell" these as OverPower cards we would technically be infringing on the actual cards' market because "people" could be "confused" that they are the real cards.
I updated the Iceman Frozen Prison card image, this time is the edited version. Hoping to get rid of the bubbles "completely" but this is the best I can do while keeping the image with its context.
Quick updates on images still needed:
Angel - Aerial Combat
Angel - High Flyer
Black Cat
Black Panther
Captain Britain
Captain Mar-vell
Colossus
Dazzler
Deathlok
Doc Samson
Domino
Falcon
Havok
Hawkeye
Heroes for Hire
Hulk
Human Torch
Inhumans
Invisible Woman
Iron Man
Jean Grey
Jubilee
Ka-Zar
Maggot
Marrow
Maverick
Mr. Fantastic
Namor
Nightcrawler
Phoenix
Polaris
Punisher
Quicksilver
Reyes
Rogue
Sabra
Scarlet Witch
Shadowcat
Silver Surfer
Strong Guy
Sunfire
Thor
Thunderbird
Vision
War Machine
Wasp - Wasp Sting
White Queen
Note that these also include images that I haven't pasted into cards yet, I've only been doing research today.
1st off the the set looks like its going to be awesome! I think the border would look better with the Marvels scrolled in the background like Dr.deathe25 has it just to keep with the previous sets pattern. Will you be emailing us when its time to order? I definitely want as few sets.
Appreciate the time you are putting in. Also how many people will be at the tournament in Riverside the 18th? I live in Downey, CA and I am thinking of going. Have you ever considered having a tournament at Frank&sons?
I want to avoid using the Marvel logo because that would suggest that I am representing the company.

I was suggesting using the word MARVELS in the background of the border since that is the name of the set. I would not use any actual copyrighted Marvel logo. Either way is fine tho ;)
That would be borderline stepping on their trademark since: we would be producing cards with their name and they likely do the same -- that's a direct infringement if I understand it correctly. Even if we don't use logos, people could reasonably expect that something with "Marvels" printed on the card would be produced by "Marvel". My law professors have taught me that "reasonable" is an extremely important word when determining these things.
Alas, without further ado, here's a picture of Thor's Unfettered Might to celebrate me finding 46 of 92 images:
Wow! Great Thor card and art choice. Obviously the less word balloons, the better. :)
It's not like I'm purposely choosing images with bubbles :P
Just trying to finish the remaining 46, Thunderbird is impossible to find since he kinda died early on. I might have to look into really old comics.
I found these:
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_TVewBG16r_M/TVGruIBvNAI/AAAAAAAAAHI/AQM2O6bwOtA/s1600/chaos_war_xmen_2.jpg
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_TVewBG16r_M/TUhDNS8757I/AAAAAAAAAGc/f4_UjNfYSjA/s1600/chaos_war_xmen_1.jpg
There might be some pics in the chaos war comics that you could use.
I guess I might have to source newer images for Thunderbird, I'll consider those. The second image is too similar to the current set of Marvels so I won't be using it.
you could cheat, and go with a picture of warpath, since they looked identical up to the mid 90s

I thought that too. Warpath did use the Thunderbird name for a bit.
I'll consider that, though if it's sourced from a "Warpath" title comic book, I'll have some explainin' to do :P
There's only about 5 panels with Thunderbird in it from 1994-2002 and none of them are worthy. I'll dig deeper after I finish the rest up.
The Thor card looks SICK! I cant wait till this set is complete. Do you have pics of any of the other cards besides the couple on this post?
I can't guarantee they will look as awesome as the Thor one. I'll try releasing some previews as I reach certain milestones. Any characters in particular?
After 50 years of no new cards I'll get excited about any card! :o
Jack, excellent work on the Thor. Far better than the one I found.
Can you post the list of which heroes you're still looking for?
Angel - Aerial Combat
Angel - High Flyer
Black Cat
Black Panther
Captain Britain
Captain Mar-Vell
Colossus
Dazzler
Deathlok
Doc Samson
Domino
Falcon
Hawkeye (I found one where he's climbing out of a vent which is the perfect imagery for the card but I can't find it again)
Human Torch
Inhumans
Invisible Woman
Jean Grey
Jubilee
Ka-Zar
Maggot
Marrow
Maverick
Morph
Mr. Fantastic
Namor
New Warriors (Rage)
Nightcrawler
Phoenix
Polaris
Professor X (The one I have is awesome but has some really annoying speech bubbles, hoping to find something better)
Psylocke
Punisher
Quicksilver
Reyes
Rogue
Sabra
Shadowcat
Shang Chi (Found one but I can always use more)
She Hulk
Silver Sable (hard to find "recent" comics of her)
Thing (found, but I want better)
Thunderbird
White Queen
I'll upload Deadpool in a bit.

Yep, those are the ones I've looked at, there's one panel I have in mind. It's tricky because the card is both defensive and offensive in one, it's really had to find a panel that depicts both. I guess I should just go with one since there isn't much to pick from.

Will there be a 4-stat Glactus in the Marvels set? The one on the OP FB page is excellent, it would be a shame if it wasn't used.
I'll talk to BBH about that when we have our meet up. We won't use the one from Marvel vs. Capcom 3 because it doesn't fit the criteria for the set. I'll showcase a different image from a comic later tonight.
i'll put a vote for using your galactus, jack
it's a menacing galactus, without looking goofy. hard to accomplish with that headgear ;)
I'll source more images of him, he's pretty common so there shouldn't be a shortage of his picture.
I need some help with Phoenix, I'm hoping to source images that look exactly like the ones from the X-Men set, any ideas?
This one is quite good. I'm not sure if I have this comic as my collection is stacked up in long boxes and I have quite a few to look through :(

Awesome, I just needed a title. Probably should have looked for the titular books first.
It's really hard to find Phoenix (guessing Rachel Summers/Rachel Grey?) with the likeness of the other cards. So I defaulted to using #1's cover.

Like the rest I think the Cyclops & Hulk cards are awesome! Are these pics coming from older comic books?
I listed the source of the comics on the card, I'm mostly aiming for cards from OverPower's debut (~1995) to it's demise (~2002). I'm willing to look outside the time range if certain characters don't appear or doesn't have a good image to use (Alpha Flight's Madison Jeffries for example -- I'll post that tonight).
Great Cyclops and Hulk pics! Wouldn't mind if Thor wasn't blurred in the Hulk card. ;)
The Hulk card is still a work in progress, notice now I messed up with Thor's left hand? I'll consider not blurring Thor since it's pretty obvious who's the main character of the card.

I like how the cards are looking!
yeah, the bottom 2 are more consistent with the style
i'd rather have either of the top 2, regardless

Bottom right Galactus definitely. I like that it isnt the usual dark background that would come with a character like him (we already have a dark background Galactus) and the art matches the cards you have shown so far. Of course you know you have to include any card you put up on the forum or I will feel like the set is incomplete! :o
Updated the Galactus. Turns out there's another frame in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 that I can use as well.

top left
Oh wow! I'm now sold on the Top Left one. :D My original fave was middle left.
my order of preference is left to right, going down each row
Top Left.
Top left and bottom left are the best. Top right is pretty good as well (that's the one I have!)
I still like the bottom left one the most
We might do two releases of Galactus, one inside the Marvels set and one as a promotional card to be distributed at a later date (possibly at large meetup/tournaments). I'll talk to BBH this Saturday to work things out.
so, since getting a job as a warehouse handler, my work lends zero time to surfin' the 'net, so I've barely found any time to get online anywhere, and certainly very little time for OP.
First let me say - congratulations on finishing school! very commendable indeed!
i'm glad I made the time to read through this particular thread tonight! This work looks amazing so far, Jack! My only thoughts are that I would love a second card for the OJ Specials (domino and shadowcat) because they present a very clear, original strategy (new via Marvels, where you have a way to directly attack the Battlesite without losing venture). Otherwise, I'd say the distribution of cards you have looks good (outside the Heroes/Specials, a Marvel 8A, 6A, and 5M are the most interesting to me to include).
As for the artwork, I know your pain. I printed my own set of marvels a long time ago (using name badge labels), and I just took anything I could find on the 'net, not worrying about era or quality at all (just looking for images that "match" the card effect) and it still took me FOREVER!! I guess you and BBH have one major thing working in your favor - a comic collection. I really never had much of a collection of my own (just a few TPB and random issues of X-men books... okay not random, the ones that had Gambit on the covers ;D )
anyway, I'd love to get a set whenever it's finished. I'll keep tabs on it still, even if I can't contribute or comment :P
i think that top left one fits great it'll be hard to get one that fit better and even though it from marvel vs capcom 3 it looks overpower more then most pics i bet we'd find

Danm it, I can't get to the meets or tornys :(
Need my custom card pic fix!!!! :o
Sorry, it's a really busy time in my life right now.
Gonna give everyone an update on what's happening.
We had our meetup this past Saturday and talked about the Marvels and how we're going to get it printed.
Firstly, we're going to be printing roughly 144 cards in our "set". The list of which cards will be included will be posted once BBH looks it over.
Secondly, we're going to be doing a test run of the cards to make sure we don't run into mistakes with the image exporting and image sizes when printing off our batch. That cost will be pushed onto the overall cost of the cards -- and it will be minimal (~50 cents/deck).
Thirdly, the cost of the cards will be less than $13 USD prior to shipping. We'll know final prizes once we place the order. All orders will require shipping with tracking unless you pick it up in person at one of our Toronto meetups/tournaments.
Thirdly point five, we will limit the number of decks per person as stated previously. We will post that limit after discussion. This will also be a one-time print run and we're likely capping the total number we're printing to 100. Sets printed after that will have blank imagery for the character picture -- if we decide to do any. The images released online will have full colour images.
--
I'm expecting to get the sample deck in by mid September and that should coincide with the completion of cards. They will be up for review to select members of the community and sent to the printers. We expect to receive them before the October Toronto tournament which is happening on Saturday October 20 at a location to be determined.
--
And here's a version of Beyonder which won't be included in the set of Marvels because it will interfere with the market for Beyonders. We have an idea for the card though... details to be announced soon.
Picture soon...

I'm not really sure what else I can say, Jack :)
Have you put any thought into doing a "collector's set" that is just one of each card? I don't know how much of a pain it would be from a logistics standpoint, but I imagine it would cut down on the printing costs if enough people just want a set for collection purposes. I'm not sure about everyone else here, but I don't play in person anymore so I don't need more than one of each card and would be more than happy to donate any duplicates to those that would want them if it would help bring costs down for everyone.
As for the Galactus heroes, my votes are for top left, bottom left, and top right in that order.
I've been catching up on comics from the desired era lately and have been keeping my eyes peeled for ideal artwork, but I haven't really found anything worthwhile. Maybe I'm just reading the wrong titles :P. If I do find anything though I'll be sure to speak up.
I see what you are saying but personaly I would like a play set just incase :)
Unless there is high demand, >50 or so people, the cost of doing a set with only one of each card would cost more than the 144 cards. Right now, we're probably near 10 cents/card which is ideal for a small run. As for donating the duplicates, I'll have to talk about it with BBH.
Galactus would be included for sure, and I'll have to tally the votes up to see which one to include. Ideally it would be one of the bottom 4 since they were from comic books so it would keep a consistent feel with the rest of the set.
We're also including the Any Power Teamwork and possibly the Avenger's ID since there's absolutely no market to ruin if we were to introduce those cards.
Everything sounds great Jack.
Thanks for the update, Jack.
Not cool to tease us with that Beyonder card when we can't have it included. :P Haha. J/k

I second that, even though I have a Beyonder card, I would still like one in the Marvels set.
Here's the Beyonder card, it's temporary until I find a full body image -- please let me know if you know of a good one.

I found a decent one but I have no idea where it came from:

for my two cents, I actually prefer that headshot over a full body image. I think that one you have is pretty dang good!

@ Jack.
If that Byonder pic isn't in a SW II comic I would guess it would be in one of the following tie-in issues:
Jul. 1985:
Captain America #308; Iron Man #197; New Mutants #30; Uncanny X-Men #196
Aug. 1985:
The Amazing Spider-Man #268; Fantastic Four #282; Web of Spider-Man #6
Sep. 1985:
Avengers #260; Daredevil #223; Hulk #312
Oct. 1985:
Alpha Flight #28; Avengers #261; Dazzler #40; Rom #72
Nov. 1985:
Doctor Strange #74; Fantastic Four #285; Thing #30
Dec. 1985:
Cloak and Dagger #4; Micronauts #16; Power Pack #18; Power Man and Iron Fist #121; Thor #363
Jan. 1986:
Amazing Spider-Man #273; New Defenders #152; New Mutants #36; Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #111; Uncanny X-Men #202
Feb. 1986:
Amazing Spider-Man #274; Avengers #265; Fantastic Four #288; New Mutants #37; Uncanny X-Men #203
Mar. 1986:
Avengers #266
That's my guess too, I just don't have them on hand to know which one yet.
I'm likely rotating the image so it looks like a proper card. Maybe by Monday night.
And a quick note: the inherent on the Beyonder was an old one, I'll refresh the image by Monday night too.
EDIT:
New Beyonder image, I went through all the tie-ins:

And.. this will not be released anywhere anytime soon but since I found an awesome image...

Stop teasing us Jack. :P
I need to adjust the numbers on the icons a bit but the rest of the card looks fine. I'm not adding filters to it since it'll spoil the effect of the card.
And another teaser...

I'm not gonna put good artwork to waste.
i must say its a pretty good start

Oh no; I'll be in Ottawa that weekend! I hope there will be other opportunities to pick it up... Shipping to St. Catharines seems silly.
Must get Marvels!
As long as you pre-order, we'll keep it around until you attend a meetup. We'll probably do a meet up in December too.

looks great! love that you're including multiples of stuff that needs multiples
what happened to avenger's id? decided to nix it?
We've decided not to include it. It's really not that useful with the generalized OPD duration rule. Plus it will take a while to come up with a good image.
Sounds great Jack. Just let me know when you need payment and how we can pay (for example I have paypal).
Sounds fantastic Jack. Just let me know the ordering details when you have them.
BBH will be taking care of the payments since I won't have enough capital to place the order. It will likely be Paypal unless you show up for the meetup, then we'll handle it with cash.
Just doing a quick calculation on postage, it might cost $20 for shipping since it's over 1lb of cards.
$20 for shipping from CAN to USA? if it is within the USA we have parcel post and flat rate envelopes which should be $5-6 for shipping.

Thats a shame. :(
We'll probably include it as a promotional card in the release. At this moment, the cards are pretty much good to go for the mass print order. Just waiting for a few more things.
The postal company in Canada is a complete rip off. We're hoping that the shipping costs don't amount to that much but that could be the reality of the situation.
Not sure if it'd be worth it, but I'll volunteer to be the "US distributor". If it's financially advantageous, you could ship all of the US orders to me in Wisconsin and then I could mail out the individual packages.
It's probably better if someone close to Toronto could just pick them up and bring them back to the states, but I'll volunteer anyway.
The problem with that solution is that only the initial orders will be shipped "at a discount". Future orders will have to be shipped from us unless we send you extra inventory.
From a logistics point of view, it will be a nightmare since we'll have to factor in the shipping to you and figure out completely new rates from you to individual members. People would have to pay their share of the shipping to you and their individual shipping cost.
We're still working out the costs of shipping, BBH will get us a better estimate directly from the post office counter at some point. We should be able to qualify for small packet rates since our dimensions are way below the 90cm combined L+W+H and it's within 1kg. That should be at most $15 by Air. We'll get better numbers soon before the taking actual payments. We'll probably overcharge you by $2 so that we have a cushion to work with, and all extra amounts will be refunded.
That's what I figured. Just thought I'd offer.
I love everything I'm seeing here on the card multiples. My only question is about Deadpool's card... why only 1? that card has been SO useful to me, I always use at least 2, sometimes 3 in a deck :-\
(sincerely, not trying to gripe, just wondering if I've missed something here)
We can bump it up to two but we'll need to bring a card down. Any suggestions?
*if i could only send cash*
There's a problem with sending cash or money order is that we'll have to facilitate refunds and that will be tricky. We are only doing Paypal for shipping and pick up orders and cash for pick ups.
I would say either Angel's NJ or Storm/WMachine's ON
We're keeping Angel's card at 2 since he has no other cards to use. The ON specials should be identical for both characters so removing one and not the other will unbalance them.
My vote would be for Cyclops' card since he already has enough cards.
war machine's
even though there's an imbalance, his card is really only going to be used through the battlesite.
in all the games i've played (alot!) i've never seen someone use war machine
You can easily say the same with Sabra and we're including 3.
I'm wanting to remove Cyclops' or Strong Guy's third card, even though I use 3 in my decks, they probably don't merit 3 cards for standard decks.

I didn't realize you gave Cyke 3! yeah, i'd definitely bump that down to 2. While i've used 3 HNs myself (with Gambit), Cyke already has the AR and the BO. Personally, I've always doubled the AR before tripling the FT.
Okay, I'll confirm that with BBH and make the change.
do you have a running list of people who requested a set from when you first announced, or is there going to be a round again of people to say if they want a set or not?
What we did a few months ago was just to gauge interest to see if this project was worth doing and get a very rough number of how many to order. None of that is binding at all and other than myself and BBH, nobody has any sets reserved for them.
We'll start with 100 and make sure those sell out before doing another set of 100. I really doubt we'll sell all 200 since our current numbers show ~80 sets. Of course, with the SoCal tournament and much more expanded fan base, we might creep over 100 orders easily when the order page is put up.
EDIT:
I'm removing one Cyclops' Forced Force and adding one Deadpool's Knock 'Em Silly.

Will there be a limit on the number of sets that can be ordered? I read something about that before, but couldn't find any updates.
Likely 2 per person, most individuals don't need more than that.
Galactus will have two versions released, one will be a promotional card released at our events and giveaway/contests, etc. I'll probably consider mailing some to tournament organizers in other cities.
The other will be chosen from this image, please vote for one image.

The cards look fantastic, Jack!
I would like to remind you that I am interested in a set, which I would like to be mailed when they're available. Do you know what shipping to London, ON would cost approximately?
Thanks again for all of your hard work!
Likely no more than $10. BBH and I still need to figure out the boxes we'll use to ship it and etc. The weight is 0.4KG for 1 stack of cards.
EDIT: Funny how, using the calculator provided on Canada Post's site, shipping it to California is cheaper than shipping it down the 401. :(

Yeah, it's baffling to say the least. Regardless, I can't wait to receive my cards! Just let me know what the total is, and I'll gladly pay it. Any idea when you'll be shipping them out?
We'll ship them out near the October tournament (20th).

Great, thanks.
Have you had much intrest from the UK and Europe? I would gladly act as a distributor if it works out to be cheaper.
Using the calculator, it also works out to be around $10-$20, which is very reasonable for overseas shipping. Unless the price gets really absurd ($30/shipment), we'll likely ship them out from here (reasons stated earlier about logistics).
So do we need to keep checking this thread regularly for payment / ordering information or are you going to be sending private messages to each person individually?
I'm gonna guess that Palatinus could send a mass message to everyone on the forums about this. If not, I'll send a mass PM.
Sounds good. Thanks!
I vote #2 for Galactus, though I'm not sure how well it'd turn out printed. Ah well, the way the voting's going I think #1's going to win it anyway, which I'm just fine with.
Really like the cardback design, or at least what I can see of it :P. I always liked the more minimalist design of the DC and Image cardbacks and think the custom design really unifies the look of all three very nicely.
We also have votes from the Facebook community, it's almost a draw between two of them.
The card back was one thing that I really wanted to change. I obviously can't use the Wolverine/Spider-Man one so we needed something different. I originally wanted just the logo in the center but we also had to include disclaimer text. Here's what it looks like:
Black would use a lot of ink. Is there another color option?
We're not getting charged by the amount of ink. We're actually using a professional print shop to get these done.
The above is still a sample version of the card, the real one will be adjusted slightly.
EDIT:
We couldn't really use "green" or "blue" or "red" because they "could" be "confused" with "real" OverPower cards. :(
I like the all black back, it looked good in the background of the Gambit card that was posted for preview.
Impressive work.
Almost everyone that has made a set of Marvels immediately went with the Hereos for Hire #1 image:

I decided to sway away from it and find something else:

Like I said on Twitter, I think this was a really good change. The new image looks a lot less 'generic'.
Yes, all around fantastic work. Is it possible to potentially venture into more fan sets in the future?
We'll explore the possibility. The amount of time I put into this was exhausting and that was only image hunting. We'll probably need everyone to help work out new specials and balancing them and play testing -- in addition to the image hunt. Marvels was pretty much tried and tested with The Reserves so we really didn't have to do much except for images.
Understood. It takes a village. :D
Some of those Marvels appear to be slightly OP compared to the released cards also. Would be nice to have future sets with power competitive to the Marvels.
There was some minor discussion with toning some of the cards down and/or modifying, but in the end, we wanted to stay true to the information that was provided to the community.
Since we would be asking the community what they'd like to see, I'm sure we'll come up with something that everyone can accept.

Indeed, and the logo on all black isn't unprecedented either. It immediately reminded me of the collector's box (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Marvel-OVERPOWER-Limited-Edition-Collector-s-Box-NIB-Great-Art-Work-Cover-/140840692135), which I always dug.

I think more "fan sets" would be great. Even if it were to plug a few holes like evening up the amount of specials that each Character has and adding the missing Characters from the battle sites.
I would be willing to help but I'm only good at basic stuff on computers and I have loads of X-Men comics I could look through for card pictures.
Most of the work needed doesn't involve any fancy computer skills. As mentioned earlier, figuring out new specials for each character, play testing, etc. is also needed. To be honest, it only takes about 15 minutes to make each card after all the other information is found.
On an unrelated note, here's X-Man's Mind Slam:

Love the X-Man - Mind Slam card! Certainly has the Nate Grey seal of approval. ;)

Are you guys reserving any more set orders? I don't remember if I posted earlier in this thread expressing interest, but I would be down for one set if the option is available.
Yes, PM me your name and I'll add you to the list.
We'll eventually need everyone's contact info, but I don't want to arrange it all publicly.

Also sent you a PM for (2) sets.
The order has been placed, the sets are being printed and I'm a lot poorer for the time being. Jack has sworn off of Photoshop now, and it's my turn to actually do some work on this project, so I'll be handling the shipping.
If all goes well, we'll have the cards in our hands by next week. More news as it develops!
Can I get a solid 'nerd squeeeeeee?' :P
-BBH
Nice :)
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! ;D :D :) :D ;D
Thanks BBH! Are you going to start sending PMs with totals, payment options, and requests for shipping addresses?
We're going to wait until the cards are in hand. Then I think Jack has something special in mind through his site. More announcements next week when the shipment arrives. Yikes - I'm looking at 70 lbs of cards I have to lug up 4 stories. Fun times ahead.
-BBH
Remember i signed up for a set. I wasn't joking in my earlier post.
Thanks. I think it'd be cool to have both sets.
- DRDEATH
That is awesome news, congrats! Let's just hope they come off the presses alright.
Looking forward to getting a set in hand.
Time to give credit where credit's due...
Big thanks to BBH for spearheading the project and taking care of the business side of things.
Thank you to all the people who provided feedback to the initial card design and layout.
Thank you to everyone who provided card art ideas, a good portion of them made it onto the final card.
Thanks to everyone on these forums for providing feedback when we decided to release previews of cards. This topic is the #1 topic when it comes to replies (unfortunately, #2 for topic views).
We will release more information about the cards including all card images, what changes we made to them (mostly grammar and clarification, nothing that changes the way a card was intended to be played), how many of each are included in the pack, etc.

Here are Angel and Wasp:

Like the Angel card. Not so crazy about the Wasp card ???
It was pretty hard to find a consistent image of Wasp and within the time range that I had to look through.
Like the Angel card and would like to see a more traditional look for Wasp. But I understand if you didn't have that option based on your previous post Jack.
Overall both look very professional and well done!
@ Jack & BBH.
What is the card stock that is being used for the Marvels set and do you know if is available to buy in home printing sizes?
Cheers
Since there is only one week left until the launch date of our Marvels, here's a preview of a few cards, some of which were posted to Facebook a while ago (sorry!):

Hi Jack,
Just thought I would check in and see if there's an update for those of us having the cards shipped to us. I think you mentioned BBH was going to be handling that process, but I wanted to make sure we don't miss out :)
Thanks!
The launch of our Marvels is this Saturday and we will have preview pages up by Midnight EDT on that day.
The cards look epic! The Daredevil card makes me want to read the Kevin Smith run again. ;D
Thanks Jack.

OMG! I hadnt seen most of those cards. They are EPIC!!! I need that set yesterday! Will I be getting a PM when its time to order my sets?
They're coming.... they're coming. Patience.
In the meantime, if everyone can PM me their mailing addresses (or just zipcodes for now is also fine) I can get you accurate shipping quotes.

How are you planning to have people pay for the sets? PayPal?

I'm in total agreement. They have done a great job. Can't wait to get them myself. :)
Alright everyone, the good news and bad news -
The Good:
I've processed everyone's orders and laid them out. I have shipping quotes, and if you haven't gotten them yet, I'll get to you eventually. I'm doing this one at a time and starting with our pre-orders so bear with me.
In the meantime - everyone take a look at the info at this link - http://overpower.ca/marvels.php
It's the basic stuff we need all of you to understand before committing. Disclaimers etc. We are not affiliated with Marvel and this is a personal project that we are making available to our little online Overpower community. We're strictly not-for-profit on this, and everything is being provided at cost. Anyway, I'll stop rambling all the info is on the site.
Attached is a photo of my coffee table, which is currently home to all of the sorted orders. :o
The Bad news:
We're pretty much out. A few new people have come out of the blue to request sets, and that's it, that's all. This is a one-time deal, so we're not printing any more. I have everyone's name on my list, and you'll be contacted soon if we haven't been in touch already.
Thanks for your support on this one everyone. It's awesome to have actual cards for the Marvels, and I hope everyone enjoys their set. Moreover, I hope to see some of you in person with our cards at upcoming meetups in Toronto and the US. We have a tentative Buffalo Tourney coming up, Hosted by the Orange King, and there's talk of a possible event somewhere central to everyone here in the East - I've suggested Pittsburgh myself. If anyone is based in the Pitt, let us know of any good spots where we can set up an event!
-BBH
I am from Pittsburgh, though live in NC now.
As far as hosting in the Burgh, I guess you'd be looking for a comic shop? I wasn't a big frequenter of any shop. I have no personal connections. I do know of some places though.
www.eides.com/ is a big comic book shop downtown.
I wonder if hosting a restaurant/bar would be another option. Getting a private room and some food/drink. I guess that would incur more cost, but it also has fun potential.
It feels like the week before Christmas (or any celebration where gifts are exchanged.) Lots of excitement!!! I have so many ideas for decks especially for doubles Overpower (2v2) since that is the format of choice my friends and I play.
I hope that's my set with the mega powers on it.

My cards came in the mail today.... SO MUCH FUN to crack those stacks and go through them. Now to put them in plastic sleeves and 3 ring binders.... i mean build decks :)

Hello all,
Jack and I have been talking about printing up some sets of 'The Marvels' on Proper Card Stock for a while now, but we've found a printer who's willing to do it.
-BBH
To go from this idea to perfectly made cards is incredible! My compliments to everybody involved. Looking at football & sorting thru new cards...doesnt get much better! Which card is not playable? Now when are you starting on Ultimate Evil!? :o
Come on guys, this isn't fair... I just missed the mark by a month! Everyone is opening Marvels sets and have pretty new cards to build decks. Just looking at the setlist gets me wanting to build some new decks, plus the fact that there's a community of people alive and currently playing the game. I've talked to a few friends, and I've got them getting their collections out to play some OP. There's about five guys here in my town... I could probably make an order for 5+ sets just by myself! Is there no way AT ALL that you could do a second printing??? Or maybe someone ordered more than one and would be willing to part with a set. Or maybe someone can tell me how to get my own set printed... seriously, I could almost cry at just how close I was to being in on this project. Can anyone offer me comfort??? :'(
And new players that come into the game would love to have a set I'm sure... I have enough OP to make some decent collections for deckbuilding, minus ultra rare stuff. I have tons of characters, avoids, power cards, doubleshots, teamworks, you name it. Someone will want a set of Marvels in the future! A second run would be a good opportunity to have them on hand for the future and longevity of the game! HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!
The only comfort I can offer you, trooper, is that Jack and BBH aren't the only people who have worked on creating Marvels sets for others. Overpower Legion over at Facebook is also printing out his own sets and I've seen him post that he's offering them to others free of charge. You might want to check that out if indeed there won't be a second run with the current Marvels sets currently being shipped out.

Sorry man, no second run on this. As it stands now, a small, finite run for no profit catered to a specific niche group keeps us within the conditions of 'fair use,' regarding use of the intellectual property. But if we started taking fresh orders and doing re runs of this, we'd really be pushing it.
That being said, I have had a few orders shift along the way, and with a few people left to contact me more orders may be changed or cancelled. So PM me your info, and I'll contact you if a set becomes available.
-BBH
Got my set in the mail today. They look fantastic! Never would have imagined I'd be looking at a new set of OP cards, let alone ones this professionally done. This was definitely a great treat for everyone, but as someone who has been with the game since the beginning in 95 it feels like the last chapter in OP's history has finally gotten the ending it deserves. Thanks again to everyone that worked on these to make this set possible!

I believe everyone has now been contacted.
I have not heard back from a few of you. If you requested a set and changed your mind, that's cool, just let me know, but don't ignore the emails. If you didn't get the email or PM, message me right away.
If I'm holding a set for you and you don't respond before the 15th, then your set is up for grabs.
If you missed the boat when we took pre-orders, I'll put you on a waiting list in case another cancellation occurs. So far, I have been able to accommodate everyone who came in late thanks to other members giving up their sets.
Once supplies are gone, we are done. There ain't no more.
Cheers all!

I am not going to be able to get my set. So whoever else wants one can now get one.
I realize such a thing is probably a long way off if it ever happens, but are there any plans to replace the Marvels images in OP Online with the images used for this custom set? I think they'd be a big improvement over what's in there currently, and anyone that couldn't get their hands on a set could at least play with them in OP Online.
I'll investigate it but it won't be a priority for me.

EY codes are offensive only correct?
I was checking out "with great power..." and I was wondering if you could keep a duplicate? Doesn't seem like you could, but I was just wondering...
And in the case of Prof X and Cap, if the drawn card is an attack, but it isn't usually playable by these guys, can they still play it? Say it's a ko'd teammate's special card, or a teamwork that they normally couldn't play?

As far as the OF coded cards, if the drawn card can be used offensively, it can be immediately played, no matter if its playable or not by that character. So, yes to a KO'd teammate's special card or any teamwork. There's a thread about it here:

There wasn't any room to include it; just assume you can't draw/choose duplicates -- which is kinda a meta rule.
Okay, so Snowbird from Alpha Flight is a little bit better because of that.
And the way we've always played, if it doesn't specify that you can keep dupes, we discard them. I'm assuming that's the meta rule. Thanks for the help guys! I know I ask alot of questions... I'm like the 5 year old of the forum. "Why?" "Why?" "How come?" "Why?"

Is there a possibility to get details on what was ordered to get the cards the way you guys made them? Stock and coat at least? These are really nice.
All I can really say is standard playing card stock with a gloss finish.

"wow" doesn't due this justice!
I mean, I have a Marvels print on card stock. while much of the artwork is pretty good from that other set, the quality of the cards themselves left something to be desired...
But this set- !! the artwork has a fantastic feel to it, with the nostalgic sampling of 90s work, paired with the absolute, top-shelf card quality...?! the solid black backing, the hash-textures, etc., etc., etc.! I could go on gushing, but I feel like I'm the last guy to the dance - you all know this already!
anyway, sincere thanks to everyone involved. these are a beaut!
I agree with ncannelora. The Toronto set has the look and feel that could come straight from a booster pack! The ONLY thing I would question is the font size being slightly smaller than a normal OP card, but that is nitpicking. I was completely in favor of using artwork from that era, but to enhance the artwork was incredible (great editing)! I also appreciate the dups of cards we may use more than one of.

Noted. Though in our defense, the font size is similar to the X-Men expansion.

Some of the fonts are much more condensed because Marvels was very wordy.
Also the corner cut is correct, 1/8. Not 1/4 like some homemades.
Wordy was ok though... text on the card either means it does lots of cool stuff or helps prevent needing stupid meta rules. :P
When you say 1/8 corner cut, are you talking about the round edge of the card?
yes.
last night i bought a corner cutter from michaels. the smallest they had a was 1/4, so my homemades look a little off.

yeah, the cut IS great! the other set I had was done to the card specs of XM edition, but also, still didn't quite have the correct corner cuts :-\
still, super-psyched about these! gotta find a live opponent...
I still haven't got mine yet :'( I should be able to pay for my set next week.

huh. I actually have some friends that moved out to TN last Summer who would love to see me... this is probably just a pipe dream still... :-\
I've finaly managed to pay for my cards and I got them through this morning!
I would like to thank Jack, Sean and anyone who suggested images for the Marvels set. They look and feel just like the offical cards. With any luck this will be the start of somthing big.
Thanks again
Graham.

Welcome to the real world 8)
is this still available?
I believe they are all gone. There was a promotional set given at the last tournament in Toronto in October, 2018.
I dont believe any others are being printed.
got ya. thanks
Just read through all 25 pages of this thread. Even though I'm a decade late, I think it would be super cool if these could be done again.
I bet quite a few of the original sets are just gathering dust in boxes or on shelves now. If anybody has one they're willing to part with, let me know!
If you want to try having them printed your self i can send you the files of my version that are formatted for a print shop.
That would be awesome. Thanks so much, fennshysa!
Here's a link.

There's a bunch of other cards in the folder but it contains all the official marvels cards
Those files are awesome, fennshysa! I really like the artwork used for them, and so many are absolutely gorgeous!
It took me a few hours to make an amazing order with this company called printerstudio.com. I placed the order with them and it told me I would see the cards in early November.
Then last night I got an email from them saying that they can't do the order as it is because of the use of copyrighted images. I need permission (an actual signed letter; email won't do) from the copyright holder expressing permission.
I don't have much hope of that happening, but I wrote an email to Marvel legal asking who would be the person to beg permission from, being as these are completely for non-commercial use.
Wish me luck! :(
Sorry. That's what the Star Wars CCG people have been running into too. Sometimes they'll squeezed one through if they put a few generic cards on top.
I wouldn't hold my breath on a reply from marvel but good luck.
