shouldnt the person playing the card actually discard a card before playing by?
i mean why should i lose 6 cards while my opponent losses none
I agree, there should be an element of risk for such a powerful card. But the rules are explicit about these things.
1. If a card requires another card to be 'played with' it (IE: AE specials for combined attacks) then defending or negating costs the player both cards.
2. If a card requires another card to be 'discarded' (IE: The above example, or JA specials that allow you to discard and draw 4) then the card action is resolved BEFORE the effect takes place. And discarding is considered part of the 'effect.'

These are still tricky cards to set up with no cost to the player using it, as they are all (4) "suited." The only one I have/use is Dazzler's and it can be pretty tough to get a hand with no energy icons at the same time as that card. I personally think, given their rarity and the characters who have them, that they are just fine as is.
Steve didn't say anything about this card being negated. If I understood well, he thinks that the card should require a discard as an additional playing cost, just like JA specials. I think it makes sense, most times I play it from the Outback and I rarelly loose anything.
That's one of the few specials wich can actually turn tables. Of course I love it as it is!

I see what you're saying then, but I disagree. I think it's a tough, tough card, but I think this game is great for those types of cards. It's really cool that 4 characters have such a great card, one in each suit. I also think the players who got them should have had just such a card, both for the balance and for who those characters are.
As a side note, in our circle we gave a Home Made to Joker that was the same BY. It was Intellect and we called it PANDEMONIUM :D
So, just to make sure I'm following this correctly, if I had Omnibud placed, with zero cards with an intellect icon in my hand, I can still play Omnibus and force my opponent to dump ALL of his placed and cards in hand with an intellect icon? Even though I do not have to discard anything myself?

You are correct sir.
That's just awesome.
Would this card's effectiveness suffer if you had to discard your cards as you played it? Since you're gonna place all your intellect cards, it still seems really good either way.

not this one, necessarily. I think the issue raised was that there must be a discard, regardless of when, as a "cost" to use the card at all. i.e., if I have no Int icons to discard, I cannot play Omnibus.

thats what i meant
thank you
Yeah I wasn't sure I was following... thanks for clearing that up.:)
I always just assumed cards were first played then the effects happen, except for when a cards says play with another card, in which case you combine, like twin tentacles or tapping the speed force or elasticity, etc.

well, you are mostly correct. Tapping The Speed Force is a JA-card, which is the variety that says "discard x, and draw 4..." which has the sequence of playing the Special
first, and
then discarding and drawing. It's split for the purposes of when the Negate is played.
Negate a combine and gain card advantage.
Negate a JA and keep card advantage equal.
Oh sweet! I like that much better anyway. Those other are like an additional cost... ugh.
Can the new BY specials like Dazzler's be avoided? or can they only be negated? Cuz i know powerleech, power hungry monters, shatter shriek etc. have to target a character and can be avoided.
negated only
the brood/banshee ones too. afaik, only the anyhero BY was errata'd to targetted
