How would these two cards work on concert?  If I search for "The Living Island", I don't believe I can play it immediately, as its wording suggests it's played in response to an attack.

I don't think it can work, unfortunately. The Living Island is definitely a defensively played card, so I don't think it's an option after the OB. Since the OB says, "may sort through Draw Pile" you can still play the OB, it just loses it's after-effect (unless you have A-Next to pull)
