when is an attack 'final'

i noticed in the buffalo vids that this came up twice, and was ruled both ways

-is the attack final when the attacker removes the hand from the card?
-is the attack only final once the defender 'responds', and can still be moved/taken back any time prior to this?

like many other card games, I consider a card laid a card played.

having said that, I'm also intent on being gracious, so I usually let all things like this slide.

I agree.  Once the card is presented, it's played.  There really is no reason to lay a card and then pull it back.  Basically, you should have decided on your move before the card is down.  Be indecisive while it's in your hand, not when it's played

I think it is considered an attack when the opponent has let go of the card.

should be like Chess, once you let go of the piece, it's played..
