I found the website and forums by chance when I was reminicsing about the game about a week ago.  I own one of the original 3-grid starting decks (Prof X, Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Jubilee) but it is currently at my parents' house.  Sadly, when I bought the deck, there were no other kids who knew about the game.  So, I have never played a real Overpower game except when I bought a power pack and had 3 on 3 games with myself with reduced decks.

As I said before, I stumbled upon this site when I was researching about the old game, and I see that it has evolved a lot since its inception.  I have no knowledge of Locations or Battlesites, artefacts, allys, etc.  and really, I don't have a firm grip on the basics of the game either.  I have also downloaded the online playing game and have fumbled around with the deck editor, looking at all of the heroes.  But, until I get a good grip on the game, I feel I need to play around with a starter deck to get the basics.  Is there any information out there on what cards were in my starter deck above?  I can remember what specials each character had, but that's about it.  Is there also any information on what ratio of power cards, specials, teamwork, etc. should be in a decent deck?  I've looked through the deckbuilding forums, but most of them seem like advanced decks that are beyond my skill level at the moment.  Like I said, I am a true novice player and ANY help would greatly be appreciated.  Many, many thanks in advance.

Hey there! Welcome to forums!

I would honestly say don't worry about your level of skill. We all started somewhere. Just build a team that you think will be fun to play with, and let yourself learn the game as you go. There are a lot of us who are more than happy to play some rounds with you and get you up to snuff with the rules.

If you accidentally play a card illegally, it's not an issue. You'll figure it out by trial and error. If you have questions, there's always someone willing to offer an opinion or clarification about things.

Don't be afraid to make mistakes or lose games in the process.

If you use MSN, a bunch of us have an MSN circle where we log on to find one another. There are a few players on Hamachi as well.

Since locations are new to you, start with an Any Hero deck. Always a great option for newcomers as it's much easier to learn the game off of any heroes. Once you're comfortable with gameplay you can start experimenting with the locations.

Feel free to add me to your MSN list, if you use it - theelf100@hotmail.com

Cheers, and welcome to the Overpower Rebirth!!!  :D

i feel your pain.  i recently got back into it as well.  i played a bit more than you when it first came out, but we played with a bunch of incorrect rules.  and some of the rules we DID have correct, were later changed in the 'meta rules' (a set of updated rules that can be looked up).  i've played hundreds of games online over the past half year, and i'm still learning new rules.

on the plus side, for the most part, people here are very helpful.  as harv mentioned, the best way is to dive right in and start playing some games.  we're pretty patient.

a few pointers on deck construction.

-the minimum deck size is 51 (or 56 if you go with events).  try to keep as close to this as possible, as it increases your shot of 'one per decks' (typically the most powerful cards) coming up early.

-usually, people go with 2-4 of each level power card.

-basic universe and training are generally thought of as handicaps.  build a few decks without them first, then start mixing them in to see if they're right for you

-as for non opd specials, typically only go with one of each, unless they are extremely useful cards that you are willing to dupe for the chance of getting them in multiple rounds.  (these generally are teammate avoid cards, and negates)

Assuming that you are looking to construct an online deck then I'd suggest that a good place to start would be with Big Green. We always had a big green (ie strength) deck  made up and any new deck had to prove it's ability against it. It's fairly easy to make, fairly straightforward to play, is still competitive and has a retro chic about it.

Giving you some room for flexibility I'd suggest:

At least two level 8 strength characters (Heroes for Hire, Juggernaut, the Thing etc), one level 7 (often the Beast: the Brute for his negate) and the reserve hero to taste.

Since the deck is a big hitting offensive deck you can go with Any Heroes rather than a battlesite (also a bit easier for a beginner). There are 9-10 decent any hero cards worth including.

For a Mission think about what your deck is not doing so you can use some events that target opponents who may have a different strategy. Since you are not using a battlesite and have no 'Draw 3 cards' then Shattered Image with 'No activator cards may be played' and 'No cards with the word draw may be played' is a solid choice.

That means you need 56 - (2 event+9 any hero cards) = 45 more cards.

Use about 24 power cards (3 of each except use four 8's and 7's and two 1's and 2's).

Depending what team you go with you can probably use at least 5 teamworks. eg level 6, 7 and 8 strength and maybe 6 and 7 fighting depending which heroes you use.

Leaving you 16 special cards. That's rather a lot given you don't have a lot of defense for these guys but these big hitters have some good cards. Throw Spiderwoman in reserve and she can play a teammate may avoid from there so you can include at least 2 of these.

Venture high because you'll probably have more venture points in early hands than your opponent.

That's a solid, simple deck. Just wanted to add that you could throw in this Event:

Quote* TO SAVE THE WORLD!  <CL> {R}            Squadron Supreme
For remainder of Battle, after Venturing, if one player either draws or
discards cards, Placed or in Hand, then other player must draw or
discard an equal number of cards, either Placed or in Hand.

Thanks for all the help.  I'm currently building some of the decks right now.  Thanks again.
