Acts as a level 6 Fighting attack. If successful, Target Character must discard 2 cards of opponent's choice. Cards may be Placed or in Hand. (HY)

my question is, do the discards have to be usable by the target?  2 people i asked both thought yes.  for example: mr fantastic's HQ was placed, and several were in hand.  only 1 in hand was usable by fantastic, so the HQ was also pitched.  my thinking was, a card doesn't have to be usable to be discarded, so the hq can be kept, and 2 in hand can be discarded

then i looked up jack's QnA, and found this:

Question: I'd like to inquire about HY specials (eg. Heroes For Hire's White Tiger). If the hit is successful, must the opponent discard 2 cards playable by the character targetted, or just 2 cards in his hand (even if the character could not play the cards)?

Answer: When an HY hits, the cards discarded must either be placed to the character targetted OR they can be any cards in hand (regardless as to usability). Case 1: White Tiger hits Mr Fantastic (no placed cards). He has a 'Draw 3' in his hand together with an 8 intellect, and 3 other specials of his teammates. Can he choose to discard his teammates' specials and not the 'Draw 3'? Wrong. Case 2: White Tiger hits Mr Fantastic (no placed cards). He doesn't have any cards usable by him, only teammates' specials in his hand. Does he have to discard any cards? Yes

this answer seems all muddled to me...can anyone show me the light?

Nope, Its cards usable by anyone. If you take the hit, you lose Any 2 cards placed or in your hand. Useable by anyone on your team, not just the character hit.

If someone says i am wrong, I ran a card advantage deck with Neron and Red Skull is two regionals, both with different judges and thats how it was.

that's interesting, and supports what i think, but judges got stuff wrong too, unfortunately

i'd like to hear some reasons from people who think the other way, and maybe we can come to a consensus

And there's this...:
QuoteThis Special acts as a # level attack of a specified power type. Additionally, if the attack succeeds, target hero must discard two playable cards. Cards may either be placed or in the hand. Only placed cards on the targeted character are affected for discarding, not placed cards on other characters, although cards in the hand can be for any character. If there are no applicable cards in the hand or placed, ignore this effect.

I think the phrase "opponent's choice" is really what creates the liberty of discarding any cards.

That's how I've always interpreted the rule. Discard any card of your choice in hand but only discard any placed card(s) on the target character. If you can discard a placed card from a teammate then that's new to me.  :o

If you only have 1 card that you can discard do you ignore the effect since it is asking for 2 cards to discard?

I wish! no, you fulfill what you can (just like you would for Power Leech or Siberian Strength)
