I'd hate to be a "rules lawyer" but I was only able to count 5 instances of the letter A in your team lineup- I'm going to have to give you a game loss. - Seriously though, a "highlander" format was actually a sanctioned and popular format with unique prize support during Decipher's Lord of the Rings CCG heyday.  I'd play Highlander simply because I didn't have the cash to buy x4 of all the 50+ dollar power rares that the top decks required.

Not everyone has the cash to put together an onslaught citadel battlesite... and the outback functions as a poor man's equivalent.

I realize that may not logically follow but the point was that alternate formats can be entertaining...

cool.

I'll play along, though. I really think this is the better build:

Gambit - Charge Object, Charge Object ... and so on (Charge Object x56)
Angel: Horseman Of Apocalypse
Polaris
Deathbird

Assault On Onslaught missions

I figure this way,
I get to use my favorite character.
I will have 56 duplicates of a single card.
I hit the 7 letter "A"s
I hit the 73
and there's a sub-theme that they were all Horsemen of Apocalypse!

Post Merge: July 11, 2011, 08:20:16 PM

Also, I have all of those cards I listed for my deck, except the 56 charge objects. I think I have 4 ;)

he hit 7
icemAn, mAlebolgiA, two-fAce, AdAm wArlock
but, i also noticed he's at 73 with a 15deck... limit is 72.

then again, he may be mocking my previous comments on how i feel about Sum Deck Rule ;)

I can't count... Or at least not well this late ???

So, I've successfully made a HomeBase deck with this concept. Using only 7-8 specials per hero, lots of Any Heroes, more ally cards than I've ever used in a single deck...

In a few test games it's done considerably well. I can see it's going to take some considerable finesse to figure out how to best play with the deck, but it's been a lot of fun so far. I'm really looking forward to the weekend to test it out with other players!

LOL, I was re-reading this thread... I just realized what a "highlander" format is! *facepalm* because of the movie's tagline, "there can be only one"  I'm such a dork sometimes! ;D

Wow... from May till today? Lol. Nice...  That aside, I'd love to play a highlander style deck. Gotta get my ass in the current tourney first.

So, I have decided to try out a new Home Base for a "highlander" deck. I figure, it needs to have something going for it, revolving around the 8 Power cards. I need a clear strategy to win when I make it to the Power pack and I know I'll have that perfect 8 card draw.

enter... Department H(ighlander)!

I haven't played with this deck yet, but I did make a rough build in OPO deck builder.
Line Up:
Alpha Flight - 10A, 9SI, 5SI, 4EF, 2/8E, AD
Wolverine - 8F, 5I, 4F, AC, AG, EQ, BE, FD, HG,
Sabretooth - 7S, 4F, 2/8I, AD, AD, BE
Maverick - BG
Any Heroes - 7S, 4F, 3V, AC, AG, AL, BE, BQ, BY, DB, EN, ZZ (most of you know my POV re: DoW)
Power cards: 8F, 7F, 6F, 5M, 4M, 3S, 2S, 1S
Teamwork cards: 8Fsi, 7Fsi, 6Fsi, 6Ifs
Ally cards: 5E, 8F, 5S, 5I
Aspect cards: A-Next / Secret Directive
Artifact cards: Pym Particles / Shadowhelm / Adamantium
Event cards: Hellfire Club Attacked!

It seems fairly strong, in terms of total offensive output. It kinda misses on its Inherent Ability, only having the 4 Teamwork cards, but like I said above, in the Power pack, if my missions let me go FTW, I should be able to just trade hits, if Secret Directive is in play.

Pym Particles should help in 2 ways, getting to the Power Pack quicker, but also having 10 cards w/no duplicates - where my opponent is more likely to have a few.

Having several ways to attack after my Opponent concedes should help me keep the pressure on, in terms of turn advantage. Also, it should help me still get use out of cards when I'm all placed up and I draw 10 cards. My opponent cannot just place to match and concede (as easily) Plus, based on the feedback in the link below, Standoff is just that much more lethal!
http://www.beenhereandthere.com/SMF/index.php?topic=424.0

The Event, which was still a hard one to choose, has at least these 4 reasons behind it.
1) Maverick is the most expendible.
2) If he has the BG placed, I might be able to get it into play, defensively, from Reserve.
3) The 2 teammate avoids become much more handy.
4) If my opponent shifts an attack to Reserve early, to avoid a KO, it might backfire when I get Adamantium in play.

I need to build it IRL to try it out later, though. For now, all of my OPOnline time is tied up in our Tourney. I just wanted to update on this "highlander" concept for all of my curious fans  ;) In all seriousness, though, like I said before, this concept has me very intrigued and I imagine I'll be toying with it for quite awhile!

In the meantime, you're invited to constructively criticise and comment  ;D

I like the idea, and have even gone so far as to construct a Highlander deck of my own. Question... If you were to use a battlesite, you'd be restricted to 1 special from each character on the site?

I would say your choice of any of the 19 or so Any Heroes would be better then just about any 6 a battlesite would offer, but I guess that depends on what you are shooting for.

For my purposes, you'd only have 7 available activators. the six named on the battlesite + Beyonder. I had another deck on paper that would be able to use a Battlesite instead of the Any Heroes, but it didn't include an Event, so I was able to cut down to 51 cards. I never played with it, though.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, with the most recent OP Online Tournament all but finished for me, I thought I'd come back to this thread to share my deck breakdown. I did, in fact, go with the OPD Challenge in the tourney. I had built the following version, and used it several times w/live opponents.

Muir Island Line Up:
Shadowcat - 6A, 6F*, 5F, 4E, 2/10A, AG, AD, HQ
Professor X - 8M, 6I*, 4E, AG, AH, BG, AV
Colossus     - 7F, 4S, AC, AG, LO, OC, AX, AI
Capt. Brit.   - 9ES
Any Heroes - 7S, 4F, 3V, AC, AG, AL, BQ, BY, DB, EN, ZZ
Power cards: 8E, 7A, 6I, 5I, 4I, 3I, 2I, 1I
Teamwork cards: 6E+si, 7S+ei, 6S+ei
Basic Universe: 6I+3
Ally cards: 6As, 5E, 5S, 5F
Aspect cards: A-Next / Genetic Research
Artifact cards: Pym Particles / Book Of The Darkhold
Event cards: Best Laid Plans...

Ultimately, I consider the deck a success. Read here for more details on its showing:
