you're on the right track.

by "compound," I mean there are 2 factors working at once. like, the "first theme" would get you to the list you compiled already (as well as a couple others). the "second theme" would get you directly to the four I mentioned.

Wolverine, Cyclops, and Colossus were all bad guys for awhile.  Brood is usually bad but was a good guy in Planet Hulk. 

I was also thinking that they have all died, perhaps?  A likely story, I know with Marvel, but I think there's more to this team than just death, though that might be part of it.

I also thought how Wolvie became a Feral Beast and Cyclops merged with Apocalypse... I can't relate all 4, but maybe this helps someone else... Brood is really throwing me off.  I dunno...
