Unless I'm misinterpreting things, it seems that Marvel Superstars has been scrapped and they're angling for something else.  Incidentally, I'm kind of surprised there's not more talk about the Vs. System on this forum.  I bought some cards but never really got into playing it, but it seems like something you guys might have jumped all over.

P.S. Is it conceivable that Upper Deck actually owns the "rights" to Overpower?  They did buy out Fleer way back when, didn't they?

Marvel Superstars looks like it would be something you could play a couple of times before you got bored.  The "Art" is just screen shots from the movies so that sucks.  The cards they have released look like they have a very limited scope of gameplay.  I doubt this game will go anywhere.  It is probably just an attempt to cross-promote a game and the movies.  I really think they are foolish for throwing away the opportunity to re-develop Overpower.  Even killing VS seems like a mistake.  That game had some good mechanics and a lot of room for strategy.  I do think they may have gotten out of hand with the number of card types and abilities though.  That happened with Magic and for awhile they were at a loss on how to handle that.  I've tried a bunch of different CCG's over the years and I still find Overpower and Magic to be my favorites.

Thanks to the huge support of the old Vs. community, it looks like UDE may be reconsidering doing a tweaked version, if I'm interpreting their cryptic comments correctly.  They were originally planning to dump Superstars and develop something completely different. 

How would people feel about a new version of Overpower with a modern CCG resource-type engine?

VS was a shitty version of Yu-Gi-Oh, so I'm not sure how they can make it anywhere near as good as Overpower was.

I think Overpower has a solid base of resources to keep track of between venture, placing, managing hits and the duplication rule.  It can probably be improved upon, but it's not a weak point of the game as is.

I don't know about everyone else, but there is nfw I'd play another game that has the potential to mulligan 1st turn.  I played Yu-Gi-Oh for long enough with that shit, and I've played/watched Magic enough to not want any part of land shortages/floods.

You're totally correct on that one.  Overpower has a unique and effective system.  There is absolutely no reason to wreck that system by making it like other, crappier games.  Magic is actually a pretty balanced game too although there are times where the cards just don't come up right.  A bad hand can't hurt you in Overpower too, but you can mitigate those hands with conceding the battle.  Also, almost every card in Overpower is playable right from your hand without having to pay costs and what not.  It's system is more in keeping with its intended concept.  It's a battle so building up resources over time doesn't make as much sense as trading blows and trying to get your mission completed.

Yeah, it's definitely possible to draw 0 power cards with 3+ teamworks right off the bat.  This is where the venture system is pure genius, because your opponent can either take an easy 2 venture win, or potentially give you the cards to power those teamworks.

Haha, I wouldn't go so far as to say building up resources over the period of the game is a minimal part of Overpower.  Play a deck with 1 8 character vs a deck with 2 and you'll see soon enough.  Playing battle to battle untill you have 0 cards left will squander your chances in the late game.

That's pretty fair, but when I was referring to building resources, I was referring to the place one resource card a turn to give you the ability to play higher level cards type of resource, not resources that are cards to be used to play themselves.

Based on some sources I've read, the right to OP currently reside with Upper Deck, as after Fleer dropped them, Marvel interactive picked them up, botched 2.5 sets, sold the rights to WotC, who made that HORRIBLE X-men game based on the first film, and they in turn, sold the rights to UD, which created Vs system.  Now I'm an OP original, and over the years since it's "death" I've tried many TCGs, of which I still play Magic:The Gathering and Vs, though I don't play either of them proffesionally (M:TG I've only drafted in circuit and Vs I used to play pro/judge.)  The mechanics for Vs System are the best game mechanics SINCE OP.  OP still holds true as being one of the most innovative TCGs ever made, being that it doesn't feel like M:TG while you play, which makes it shine far above almost every other TCG out there.  I've seen Marvel fail at many TCGs and Vs was the best to come out of the Superhero card game since our beloved OP ended.  I have attempted many TCGs over the years including Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Tomb Raider, Dragon Ball, and at least 3 different Star Wars games just to name a few.  I am currently working on designing my own game concept/mechanics to try to bring OP back in some form or other, but time will tell how that goes.

Yeah, that one died on the vine, but now Upper Deck has put out a deckbuilding game called Legendary, and it's actually doing very well.  The base set was pretty good, but the new Dark City expansion has made it 10 times better.  Anyone looking to play with Marvel characters in a game that will surely continue for a while should check it out.  My girl and I have a blast playing it.

I got that one, too, mostly because it seemed like a good introduction to the genre.  It is... and that's about it.  To me, anyway.  It can be fun, but it gets repetitive quickly.  I think Legendary has a lot more depth to it.
